Each group explored the American History, Natural History, and Air and Space Museum. At the American History museum, students were able to see Dorothy’s ruby slippers, Archie Bunker’s chair, and even took their picture near Kermit. Also, they explored our nation’s experiences in the war as we traveled through the Civil War into the Spanish American War and getting to see bunkers from WWII. Students were awed by a piece of Tower Two from the World Trade Center and the pictures f from September 11th.
As the day progressed, we took a short saunter over to the Natural History museum. We saw the Hope Diamond, which was in a special setting because of its 50th anniversary. We then explored the various gems—students were astounded that these beautiful gems came from our Earth! They all tried to find their birthstones—people with May birthday (emeralds) were especially impressed! The early morning start and hunger started to catch up with them; so many groups took a short rest in the various movie theaters that the museums have to offer. A few groups saw a video on bioluminescents (fish that live over two miles under the sea and light up their transparent bodies). Others just needed a short rest on the steps of the museum. With our legs rested and energy back up, we headed back out again. Unfortunately, some of the museums had closed early. But fear not! The teachers improvised—some walked over to the capital while others got a close up view of the Washington Memorial. The students worked dutifully on their journal entries and now it is back on the bus heading to the hotel for pizza and sleep!!
Keep you updated in a few!!
Put pizza in front of kids and…it’s like they just won the lottery! They were starving! A few hundred pieces of pizza later, a few bags of chips, and more cookies than even Cookie Monster could eat, the kids are now upstairs, lights out (hopefully!), and sound asleep in dreamland.
It’s up and at’em at 7:00 a.m. for breakfast and monuments! Blog again after a restful night sleep (hopefully!).
Good afternoon!
It's 1:36 p.m. and we just stopped for lunch! The kids were hungry, which was great when we got to the reststop because they found a spot and began eating! They were quiet until about 10:30 this morning, when the tummies started to rumble, so we fed them a snack and popped in a movie and they were good to go until lunch time. We are currently about two hours away from D.C. and the kids are deciding if they want to go to the Natural History Museum, American History Museum, or Air and Space. We are watching Night at the Museum right now, so I wouldn't be surprised if they all want to go to Natural History!
We are getting on and off rain showers, which is fine while we are on the bus, but collective fingers are crossed that once we get to Washington, the rain will be over. Tonight, it's a pizza party and hopefully early to bed because it will definitely be early to rise!
Write back again when we get to the hotel tonight!
